The GMA News Browser: The headlines of 2012
For those who believed that the world would end this year, the news contained stories that seemed like a prelude to the apocalypse: Extreme weather, crime sprees, missile launches, fish falling from the sky. In the Philippines, a lot of things came to an end. The impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona ended with conviction. Secretary Jesse Robredo's life ended in a plane crash. Eras ended in the entertainment industry with the loss of Dolphy, Celso Ad. Castillo, and Marilou Diaz-Abaya. And the Manny Pacquiao epoch may have ended as well after a spectacular sixth-round knockout by Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez. But the tapestry of each year consists of both endings and beginnings. In 2012, the contentious Reproductive Health bill was finally signed into law after more than a decade in Congress; Pedro Calungsod was canonized as the country's second saint; and Filipinos shone in pageants, sporting events, and American Idol.
