Embahada ng RP sa US kinalampag sa kaso ng Fil-Am activist

MANILA – Dapat umanong kumilos ang embahada ng Pilipinas sa Amerika para makuha ang testimonya ng Filipino-American activist na si Melissa Roxas kaugnay sa alegasyon nito na dinukot at pinahirapan siya ng militar nang bumisita sa Pilipinas noong Mayo. Ito ang iginiit ni Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr., matapos ipahayag ng Malacanang na papaimbestigahan nila ang posibleng paglabag ng militar sa karapatang pantao ni Roxas kung totoo ang alegasyon. Sinabi ni Pimentel na dapat ang embahada na ang kumuha ng testimonya ni Roxas kung hindi na ito posibleng makabalik pa sa Pilipinas. “If Melissa Roxas cannot come back for preliminary investigation, there should be a way to get her statement before our embassy or consulate in the US just to start the investigation," paliwanag ng senador. “When trial comes, she may come back and testify personally under heavy guard like Gracia Burnham who was brutalized and kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf years ago," idinagdag ni Pimentel. Si Roxas ay miyembro ng Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) sa US at bumisita sa Pilipinas para sa isang maikling “exposure" trip. Ngunit napaulat na nawawala siya noong Mayo 19. Pagkaraan ng isang linggo, lumutang siya at kaagad na lumipad pabalik ng US. Sa kanyang press conference sa US, sinabi ni Roxas na dinukot siya at dalawang kasamahan na sina John Edward Jandoc at Juanito Carabeo, ng isang platoon ng sundalo noong Mayo 19 sa La Paz, Tarlac. Piniringan umano ang kanilang mga mata at pinosasan, saka dinala sa Fort Magsaysay sa Nueva Ecija. Sa loob ng kampo, sinabi ni Roxas na sinaktan siya ng kanyang military handlers at hindi pinagbigyan na makausap ang kanyang abogado. “The sad experience of Ms. Roxas betrayed the government’s duplicity as it professes to adhere to the United Nations convention against torture. In fact, he said it was at the Palace’s prodding that the Senate approved the Anti-Torture Act before adjourning last month," ayon kay Pimentel. “Whoever kidnapped and tortured her should not be spared from punishment according to the law," pagdiin ng senador. Kasabay nito, hinikayat naman ni Sen. Manuel Roxas II si Pangulong Arroyo na direktang makialam sa kaso ni Roxas upang mabatid ang katotohanan. “Mrs. President, you are the Commander-in-Chief and it is only you who can ferret out the truth that is apparently being hidden by wayward military personnel. Give swift and impartial justice to Ms. Roxas and her family," ayon sa senador. “Let us not get into another Palparan scenario where the UN or the FBI have to come to the Philippines and make a damning report on our domestic human rights situation. The state of human rights in our country is already a source of grave embarrassment for our country," idinagdag niya. - GMANews.TV
