International Holocaust Remembrance Day, ginunita sa Maynila

Sa International Holocaust Remembrance Day, ginunita ang anim na milyong Hudyo na pinaslang ng mga Nazi at kanilang mga kaalyadong bansa.

Sa pagtitipon, nag-alay ng panalangin at nagsindi rin ng kandila para alalahanin ang mga biktima.

Nag-alay din ng interpretative dance ang mga estudyante at umawit din ang Filipina-Israeli singer at actress na si Shira Tweg.

Isang holocaust exhibit din ang binuksan sa National Museum para gunitain ang mga pangyayari at mga biktima ng holocaust.

Sa kaniyang talumpati, sinabi ni Ambassador of Israel to the Philippines Ilan Fluss na ang International Holocaust Remembrance Day ay isa ring call to action at paalala na responsibilidad natin na tiyakin na ang mga atrocities ng nakaran ay hindi na maulit.

Binanggit ni Fluss ang resulta ng ADL Global Survey on Anti-Semitism noong 2024 kung saan 42% aniya ng mga responders (respondents) sa Pilipinas ang nagpahayag ng anti-semitic attitudes.

“Nearly half 46% of all people worldwide have anti semitic beliefs. The Philippines rank 53rd out of 103 countries that participated in the survey. In the Philippines, in 2014, only 3% of responders expressed anti semitic attitudes while in october 2024, an alarming 42% of all responders in the Philippines have expressed anti semitic attitudes,” ani Fluss.

Kaya naman mahalaga aniya ang patuloy na holocaust education.

“These figures are alarming and we cannot simply watch as this hateful ideology continues to spread. This is why today’s event underscore the importance of continued holocaust education. we are witnessing the increasing trends of holocaust denial and holocaust distortion,” sabi ni Fluss.

Pinasalamatan naman ni Fluss ang Department of Education sa pagtulong sa kanila na isagawa ang ang araw ng paggunita ng holocaust at sa kanilang pagtuturo tungkol sa holocaust sa mga paaralan.

Dahil sa binanggit ni Fluss na survey, sinabi ni DepEd Usec. Gina Gonong na hihilingin daw niya sa curriculum team na tingnan ang pagtuturo ng holocaust sa mga paaralan.

“As we reflect today let us not only honor the victims of the holocaust but let us also renew our collective commitment to ensuring that such atrocities are never allowed to happen again. I’m disturbed by the data given by the ambassador earlier so after this event i will personally ask our curriculum team to look into the teaching of holocaust in schools,” sabi ni Gonong.

Inalala rin ni Fluss ang ginawang pagkupkop ng Pilipinas noon sa 1,300 jewish refugees sa ilalim ng pamamahala ni noo’y President Manuel Quezon.

“We remember under the leadership of Manuel Quezon offering refuge to 1,300 individuals. This act of humanity not only saved their lives but also preserved the future of the entire families that are here with us today. President Quezon’s moral value and compassion are a legacy for us to be learned,” ani Fluss.

Sabi ni Fluss hindi niya dapat kalimutan ang holocaust at dapat tiyaking hindi na mangyayari ang pagkakamali ng nakaraan na maulit muli.

Sa talumpati naman ng apo ni dating Pangulong Quezon na si Gabriel Quezon-Avanceña, sa napakaraming achievement ng kaniyang lolo, ang desisyon nitong tulungan ang mga jewish refugees ang kaniyang pinaka ipinagmamalaki.

Personal umano niyang naranasan ang impact ng ginawa ng kaniyang lolo nang ma-meet daw ng kanilang pamilya ang mga pamilya ng mga refugees.

Hindi man daw nila kilala ang mga refugees pero naramdaman daw nila ang koneksyon kaya’t parang naging isa raw itong family reunion.

Dahil daw sa humanitarian act ng kaniyang lolo, nakita raw niya ang kasiyahan ng mga survivors at ang pasasalamat at pagmamahal nila sa kanilang pamilya.

“The personal relationship my family has with Israel and its people is unique and binding and will forever be a part of history. Let us remember as individuals that we are all capable of doing great things in our own little way and it might lead to greater things… and create an impact. But let us not forget that is done out of love with the kind caring and compassionate heart we can do impossible things and create a legacy which will last a lifetime,” sabi ni Avanceña.

Nagkuwento naman si Letty Dungo-Hahn na asawa ng dating jewish refugee na si Alfred Hahn na kinupkop ng Pilipinas noong panahon ni President Quezon.

Sabi niya ang Quezon City raw ang unang ibinigay na lugar ng pangulo para sa mga refugees.

Pinili raw ng kaniyang father-in-law na si Friedrich Hahn na manatili sa Pilipinas kasama ng kaniyang anak na si Alfred dahil ikinasal na ito sa kaniya (Letty).

Ang kaniyang father-in-law aniya ay tumulong sa pagbuo ng mga tulay sa Metro Manila tulad ng guadalupe bridge.

“The others left the Philippines, went back to their countries but my father in law stayed because he has an only child and that only child got married to me. So he opted to stay and work for the benefit of the construction and everything for the country,” ani Hahn. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
