UN Security Council to hold meeting on AI — French diplomat

PARIS, France - The UN Security Council will hold a meeting on artificial intelligence next week amid growing international concern over the threat from the fast-moving technology, a French diplomatic source said Monday.

The meeting would be held during the United Nations General Assembly when a host of world leaders are at the UN headquarters in New York and France holds the rotating presidency of the security council. No details were given on the exact day.

"In terms of global affairs, the issue of AI will be very high on the agenda through two different angles," the diplomatic source told reporters, highlighting "the existential threat" that AI poses to global security as well as the risks for children.

"We see strong concerns regarding the impact on children," the source said.

The safety of AI has hit global headlines in recent weeks with even some AI technology company chiefs saying there has to be greater regulation to slow down development.

But US President Donald Trump on Monday slammed suggestions that AI poses a threat to humanity, calling it a "hoax" and a "sick conspiracy".

The source said that events in Gaza, Lebanon and Ukraine would also feature strongly at the UN General Assembly and that France as monthly head of the Security Council and current G7 president would seek to defend multilateralism at a time when international institutions face mounting pressure. — Agence France-Presse
