Strong earthquake strikes Tonga; no tsunami threat to PHL, says Phivolcs

Magnitude 6.6 earthquake strikes Tonga Islands, GFZ says

A strong earthquake struck Tonga Islands on Sunday, earthquake monitors said Sunday, but there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines, Phivolcs said.

The quake was at a depth of 16 km, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said, measuring the magnitude at 7.0. Phivolcs' initial measurement of the quake is 7.3, at a depth of 59 km.

Hazardous tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within 300 km of the epicenter along the coasts of Tonga, the Pacific Tsunami Warning System said. Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom of more than 170 South Pacific islands. — Reuters
