Vatican City sites that mark Pope Francis' 12-year papacy
In his 12 years as the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis lived a humble life within Vatican City.
In a "24 Oras" report by Vicky Morales, GMA News has listed down four landmarks within Vatican City that played a vital part in the life of Pope Francis, whose real name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio, from being elected pope up to his death on Easter Monday:
St. Peter’s Basilica – The biggest Church in the world is also where Pope Francis was first introduced to the world. Today, the church is where body lies in state until his funeral mass on Saturday.
Apostolic Palace – Pope Francis’ office, where he also delivers his Angelus messages every Sunday. The Apostolic Palace is also the location of the Papal Apartments where Popes usually reside.
Casa Santa Maria – Pope Francis’ residence in Vatican, upon his desire to be closer to the people. The apartments are usually reserved as residence of visiting cardinals.
Basilica de Santa Maria Maggiore – Pope Francis’ final resting place, where he often visited to pray before and after his apostolic journey. It also served as the funeral place for peasants and slaves, according to Roman History. — Jiselle Anne Casucian/BAP, GMA Integrated News
