South Korea's Lee Jae Myung pushes for AI-driven society in APEC Summit

South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung speaks during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju, South Korea, October 31, 2025.

GYEONGJU, South Korea - The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit’s concluding session focused on artificial intelligence and demographic changes, initiatives which are being pushed by South Korea.

"The foremost principle is to build an AI-driven society where technological innovation fosters inclusive growth, 'the AI for all,'" South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said in his opening remark.

"South Korea's AI Initiative is the result of our firm determination to seize this great wave of change driven by the AI and turn it into an opportunity for us," Lee added.

This as world leaders seek to forge consensus on free trade and multilateralism.

The 21 APEC member economies include the United States, China, Japan, Russia, Canada, and other nations in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, as well as Peru and Chile.

Meanwhile, to address demographic changes, Lee suggested a "joint framework" which will respond to challenges stemming from the decreasing population.

South Korea plans to produce an outcome endorsed by all APEC participants in a written joint declaration, or the envisioned "Gyeongju Declaration.”

Lee will formally hand over the APEC chairmanship to Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose country will host next year's summit. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
