UN chief calls for de-escalation of Middle East hostilities


United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday condemned the recent military escalation in the Middle East, even as he urged all parties to immediately cease hostilities and return to the negotiating table.

“I condemn today’s military escalation in the Middle East. The use of force by the United States and Israel against Iran, and the subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region, undermine international peace and security.”

He said that all UN member states must uphold their obligations under international law, including the United Nations Charter.

“The Charter clearly prohibits ‘the threat of the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations,’” Guterres said.

The UN chief warned that continued hostilities could escalate into a broader regional conflict, with serious consequences for civilians and regional stability.

“I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation. Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians and regional stability,” he said.

Guterres reiterated the UN charter's push for diplomacy.

“There is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes, in full accordance with international law, including the UN Charter," he said.

"The Charter provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security.Saliatory actions in the region, raising international concern over potential escalation," he added.—MCG, GMA Integrated News
