Typhoon Champi maintains strength, moves west-northwestward over sea west of GuamĀ

Typhoon Champi has maintained its strength while moving west-northwestward over the sea west of Guam, state weather bureau PAGASA said Monday morning.

In it 11 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said that as of 10 a.m., Champi was estimated at 1,600 kilometers east of Southeastern Luzon, outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), moving west-northwestward with maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 215 kilometers per hour.

Champi is expected to enter PAR by the morning or early afternoon of October 20, 2026, and will be given the local name “Rosal.”

According to PAGASA, the typhoon is forecast to maintain its strength in the next 12 hours, and re-intensify Monday evening or Tuesday, and may once again reach super typhoon category.

Hazards

For land hazards, wind signals may still be hoisted over the northern and eastern parts of Northern Luzon and portions of the Bicol Region as early as Monday evening or Tuesday morning due to expected strong winds.

Wind Signals No. 3 or 4 are the highest potential signals for the current forecast scenario.

“Gusty conditions over most parts of Luzon and Visayas and portions of Mindanao are likely to begin by Wednesday. The TC will also bring heavy rains to Extreme Northern Luzon,” PAGASA said.

Meanwhile, moderate to rough seas may begin over the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao by Tuesday.

“Hazardous sea conditions (reaching very rough, high, or very high seas) may affect the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon by Wednesday onwards,” the bureau added.

PAGASA will issue a gale warning for very rough seas on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.

PAGASA advised the public and concerned disaster risk reduction and management offices to continue monitoring for updates related to Typhoon Champi. — RSJ, GMA News
