NDRRMC says Tisoy is incomparable to Yolanda
Typhoon Tisoy is not similar to Super Typhoon Yolanda which claimed over 6,000 lives in 2013, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) spokesperson Mark Timbal said on Tuesday.
“Yung comparison po natin kay Bagyong Tisoy ay comparative siya kay Glenda at saka kay Reming,” Timbal said in an interview on “Unang Balita.”
“Wala po siya sa Yolanda standards natin, at ‘yung ulan na binuhos niya ay hindi naman parang Ondoy level,” he added.
Typhoon Reming left 55 dead in Albay in 2006 while over 300,000 residents in the same province fled from Typhoon Glenda’s ferocity in 2014.
Tisoy is packing maximum sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 235 kph.
At its peak, Yolanda barreled through eastern Visayas and nearby regions packing 235 kph winds and gusts of up to 275 kph.
Timbal reminded the public to stay vigilant for possible storm surges, flooding and landslides.
Strong winds and rain brought about by Tisoy has been ravaging Albay since Monday night.
It damaged properties and prompted evacuations of residents in other provinces in the Bicol region and the Eastern Visayas, among others.
According to the NDRRMC, there are no reported casualties so far.
Over 225,000 individuals have been preemptively evacuated in Bicol region, Eastern Visayas, Calabarzon, and Mimaropa.
As Tisoy crosses the coastal waters of Quezon, frequent to continuous heavy to intense rains are expected over Bicol region, Romblon, Marinduque, Mindoro Provinces, Calabarzon, Metro Manila, Bataan, Pampanga and Bulacan until late Tuesday afternoon, according to PAGASA.
Occasional to frequent heavy rains are expected over the rest of Central Luzon. Intermittent heavy rains are also forecast over Samar Provinces, Biliran, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, Guimaras, and the northern portions of Negros Provinces and Cebu. —Dona Magsino/VDS, GMA News
