TYPHOON ROLLY

Aurora, Quezon may be placed under Signal No. 4, NCR under Signal No. 3 —meteorologist

Metro Manila may be placed under Signal No. 3, with Aurora and Quezon provinces under Signal No. 4, due to Typhoon Rolly, according to GMA resident meteorologist Nathaniel "Mang Tani" Cruz on Friday.

"Pag tinignan mo yung track, halos dito lang sa may Bulacan dadaan yung sentro [ng bagyo] kaya ramdam natin yung hangin nung parating na bagyo na yan sa NCR (National Capital Region)," Cruz said on Unang Balita.

"Kung hindi hihina yan, malamang Signal No. 3 ang abutin ng Metro Manila at yung mga Aurora, Quezon ay posibleng Signal No. 4 yan dahil sa inaasahang lakas nitong bagyo," he added.

Also expected to be placed under Signal Nos. 3 or 4 are the entire Central Luzon and areas in Northern Luzon and Calabarzon.

Asked if there's a possibility that Rolly will intensify into a super typhoon, Cruz said: "Unang-una yung talagang lalakas pa, isa yun sa talagang mga inaasahan." He added that Rolly is expected to be stronger than Typhoon Quinta when it made landfall in the Bicol Region.

"Medyo maliit ang sirkulasyon nitong bagyo pero mas mataas ang inaasahang hangin nito na dadalhin lalo na bago ito tumama, posible, diyan sa may Quezon-Aurora area," Cruz said.

In its first Severe Weather Bulletin on Rolly on Thursday night, PAGASA said Signal No. 1 could be raised in the Bicol Region on Friday morning.

It also warned that the highest storm signal that may be issued are Signal No. 3 or No. 4.

Rolly, which entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday night, may make landfall over the Central Luzon-Quezon area on Sunday evening or Monday morning, according to PAGASA.

As of 3 a.m. on Friday, the eye of Typhoon Rolly was estimated at 1,195 kilometers east of Central Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness up to 170 kph and moving westward at 20 kph. —KBK, GMA News
