Signal No. 1 up over Kalayaan Islands as Vicky traverses West Philippine Sea

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 was hoisted over Kalayaan Islands in Palawan early Monday morning as Tropical Storm Vicky (international name: Krovanh) traverses the West Philippine Sea, PAGASA said.

The islands will have 30-60 km/h winds and moderate to heavy rains.

Winds

PAGASA said strong breeze to near gale conditions, with occasional gusts of gale-force winds, will continue to prevail due to Vicky and the surge of the Northern Monsoon (Amihan).

Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and the northern portions of Cagayan, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte will have strong to gale-force winds.

The eastern portions of mainland Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, and Palawan including Calamian Islands meanwhile will have occasional gusty conditions.

Rains

Moderate to heavy rains are to be expected over the eastern portion of mainland Cagayan Valley, Aurora and the northern portion of Quezon.

Meanwhile, light to moderate rains which may be heavy at times will be experienced over the rest of mainland Cagayan Valley, Babuyan Islands, Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Camarines Norte and the rest of Quezon.

On Tuesday, Cagayan and Apayao will have moderate to heavy rains, while Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Aurora, Quezon and the rest of Cagayan Valley will have light to moderate rains which may be heavy at times.

Flooding

PAGASA warned of flooding, including flash floods and landslides during heavy or prolonged periods of rainfall especially in areas prone to these hazards or in areas which received significant antecedent rainfall recently.

Flooding may also occur in adjacent or nearby areas even without rainfall due to the swelling of river channels.

Coastal waters

The seas will be rough to high seas (with waves up to 6 meters) over the entire seaboard of Northern Luzon due to the surge of the Northern Monsoon enhanced by Vicky.

Meanwhile, coastal waters will be rough to very rough (waves up to 4.5 meters) over the following:

  • seaboard of Central Luzon
  • eastern seaboard of northern Quezon including the northern and eastern waters of Polillo Islands
  • seaboard of Camarines Norte
  • northern seaboard of Camarines Sur
  • northern and eastern seaboard of Catanduanes
  • seaboard of Lubang Island
  • western seaboard of Palawan including Calamian and Kalayaan Islands.

PAGASA warned that sea travel is risky in these areas.

Track

At 4 a.m., the eye of Vicky was located at 175 km south southwest of Kalayaan Islands, which is already outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

Vicky has maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 80 km/h.

The storm is moving southwestward at 20 km/h.

On Tuesday, it is expected to turn more westward.

PAGASA advised the public and disaster risk reduction and management council concerned to take the necessary actions.

The next severe weather bulletin will be released at 11 a.m.
