Ambulong, Sangley Point record day’s highest heat index of 50°C

PAGASA’s synoptic stations in Ambulong in Batangas and in Sangley Point in Cavite recorded the highest heat index in the country on Tuesday at 50°C.

According to PAGASA, this was followed by Legazpi City with 47°C and Casiguran, Aurora and Dagupan City with 46°C.

Clark Airport and Ninoy Aquino International Airport reported 45°C, while Aparri in Cagayan hit 44°C.

Coron, Indanta in Quezon, Laoag City, Masbate City, Roxas City, and Tuguegarao City all recorded 43°C, while Cubi Point in Subic Bay and Port Area in Manila both hit 42°C.

Further, Puerto Princesa City, San Jose in Occidental Mindoro, Science Garden in Quezon City, and Sinait in Ilocos Sur recorded 41°C.

The heat index is the measure of the temperature that a person feels in contrast to the actual air temperature. Essentially, it measures "human discomfort" and is the "apparent temperature" felt by the human body. It is computed by factoring in the humidity as well as the air temperature.

PAGASA reiterated that a heat index ranging from 41°C to 54°C may lead to heat cramps and exhaustion.

Heat stroke is also possible amid continuous physical activity, it added.

PAGASA advised the public to stay indoors as much as possible, wear lightweight and light colored clothing, and drink plenty of water regularly. — Ma. Angelica Garcia/BM, GMA News
