Odette about to reach Panay Gulf, 2 areas remain under Signal No. 4


Typhoon Odette is about to emerge over the Panay Gulf after traversing Negros island, according to the 2 a.m. Tropical Cyclone Bulletin posted by PAGASA.

As of 1 a.m., the center of the eye of Typhoon Odette was located in the vicinity of Ilog, Negros Occidental packing maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour near the center, gustiness of up to 240 kph, central pressure  of 935 hPa, and moving westward at a speed of 35 kph.

HEAVY RAINFALL

On Friday, heavy to torrential rains will be experienced over Western Visayas, Palawan, Oriental Mindoro, Cebu, and Negros Oriental.

Moderate to heavy with at times intense rains over the Bicol Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, Quezon, and the rest of Visayas and MIMAROPA.

Light to moderate with at times heavy rains over the rest of Mindanao and CALABARZON.

Residents in the affected areas are warned of the possible occurrence of scattered to widespread flooding (including flash floods) and rain-induced landslides.

SEVERE WINDS

Very destructive typhoon-force winds of up to 175 kph in strength in areas under TCWS No. 4 and TCWS No. 3 is in effect. This may bring moderate to heavy damage to structures and vegetation.

Damaging winds reaching gale- to storm-force strength will be experienced within any of the areas where TCWS No. 2 is in effect while strong winds (strong breeze to near gale) with higher gusts will be experienced within areas under TCWS No. 1.

There is a moderate to high risk of storm surge of up to 3.0 m in height in the next 24 hours which may cause life-threatening flooding in the low-lying coastal areas of Central Visayas, Iloilo, Antique, Guimaras, Negros Occidental, and several localities in the northern portion of Palawan (including Calamian, Cuyo and Cagayancillo Islands).

HAZARDS AFFECTING COASTAL WATERS

In the next 24 hours, moderate to very high seas (1.2 to 10.0 m) will be experienced over the seaboards of areas where TCWS is in effect (especially in the open sea areas). These conditions are risky for all types of sea vessels. Mariners are advised to remain in port or take shelter in port until winds and waves subside.

A Gale Warning remains in effect for several coastal waters not under any wind signal, specifically the seaboards of Northern Luzon, and the eastern seaboards of Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Davao Oriental.

TRACK AND INTENSITY OUTLOOK

Odette made landfall over La Libertad in Negros Oriental as 12 am on Friday and is now forecast to emerge over the Panay Gulf and the Sulu Sea this morning.

The typhoon will cross the Sulu Sea and pass near or in the vicinity of either Cuyo or Cagayancillo archipelago before making landfall in the vicinity of northern or central portion of Palawan in the afternoon.

The public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned are advised to take all necessary measures to protect life and property. Persons living in areas identified to be highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards are advised to follow evacuation and other instructions from local officials. -- BAP, GMA News
