Opong makes landfall, 5 areas under Signal No.4


Typhoon Opong (international name: Bualoi) has made landfall over San Policarpo, Eastern Samar as five areas were placed under Signal No.4 on Friday early morning, according to PAGASA.

In its 2 a.m. advisory, The state weather bureau said that as of 1 a.m., “the center of Typhoon OPONG was estimated based on all available data including those from Guiuan and Laoang Doppler Weather Radar in the vicinity of Catubig, Northern Samar.”

Moving west northwestward at 30 km/h, Opong has maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h near the center and a gustiness of up to 165 km/h, and central pressure of 975 hPa.

Opong has strong to typhoon-force winds extend outwards up to 460 km from the center.

In PAGASA's 4 a.m. weather update, Opong has weakened into a Severe Tropical Storm and is still being monitored inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

"OPONG has made landfall over San Policarpo, Eastern Samar at 11:30 PM yesterday and will be moving west northwestward towards Bicol Region, where it is likely to make another landfall in the vicinity of Sorsogon or Masbate this morning. OPONG will move near or over Sibuyan Sea and traverse the mainland and/or island provinces of Bicol Region, southern CALABARZON, and northern MIMAROPA, before emerging over the West Philippine Sea tomorrow (27 September) early morning," PAGASA said.

PAGASA said there is high risk of life-threatening storm surge with peak heights exceeding 3 meters within 36 hours over the low-lying or exposed coastal localities of Zambales, Bataan, Metro Manila, CALABARZON, Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Island, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Bicol Region, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Cebu, Aklan, Antique, and Capiz.—RF, GMA Integrated News
