Tino makes landfall over Silago, Southern Leyte – PAGASA


Typhoon Tino has made landfall over Silago, Southern Leyte at around Tuesday midnight, the state weather bureau said.

In an update on its Facebook page at past 1 a.m. Tuesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration said the center of the eye of Typhoon Tino has made landfall earlier at 12 a.m.

In its 2 a.m. tropical cyclone bulletin on Tuesday, the state weather bureau said “life-threatening and damaging” storm surges are expected, with more areas placed under Signal No. 4.

As of 1 a.m., the center of the eye of Tino was estimated to be in the vicinity of Mahaplag, Leyte.

Nine areas in the Visayas and two areas in Mindanao are under Signal No. 4 while eight areas in Visayas and one in Mindanao are under Signal No. 3.

In a separate 2 a.m. storm surge advisory, PAGASA also warned of “life-threatening and damaging storm surges” with peak heights exceeding three meters within the next 36 hours in the low-lying or exposed coastal communities of 30 areas in Visayas and Mindanao.

The state weather bureau explained that upon landfall, Tino is expected to cross the Visayas and northern Palawan from Tuesday to Wednesday early morning.

It is expected to emerge over the West Philippine Sea by Wednesday morning and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Wednesday evening or Thursday morning. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
