Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 4 is raised over eight areas in Luzon as Typhoon Uwan maintained its strength over the West Philippine Sea, state weather bureau PAGASA said on Monday.

In its 8 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said wind signals are in effect over the following areas:

TCWS No. 4

Luzon 

  • the western portion of Nueva Vizcaya (Kayapa, Santa Fe)
  • the western portion of Mountain Province (Besao, Tadian, Sagada, Bauko, Sabangan)

Uwas was last spotted 125 kilometers west northwest of Bacnotan, La Union packing maximum sustained winds of 150 km per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph.

The typhoon was moving west northwestward at 20 kph.

“UWAN will move west northwestward or northwestward in the next 12 hours. Afterwards, while moving northwestward to northward over the West Philippine Sea, UWAN is forecast to re-intensify tomorrow,” PAGASA said.

“By Wednesday (12 November) morning or afternoon, UWAN will begin to turn northeastward towards Taiwan Strait and due to unfavorable environmental conditions, a weakening trend is expected throughout the remaining forecast period. On the forecast track, the center of UWAN will make landfall over western Taiwan on Thursday (13 November),” it added.

The state weather bureau also said there is a high risk of life-threatening and damaging storm surge with peak heights exceeding 3 meters within the next 12 hours over the low-lying or exposed coastal communities of Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, CALABARZON, most of MIMAROPA, Aklan, and Antique. —AOL, GMA Integrated News
