What are the warning signs of a flash flood

How can you determine whether a flash flood is imminent?

According to Kuya Kim's report on "24 Oras" on Thursday, the signs are dark skies, downpour, and floating debris such as garbage and wood.

A change in the water's color also indicates an increase in water level.

Flash floods happen "within a few minutes or hours of excessive rainfall, a dam or levee failure, or a sudden release of water held by an ice jam," the US National Weather Service said.

"Flash floods can roll boulders, tear out trees, destroy buildings and bridges, and scour out new channels. Rapidly rising water can reach heights of 30 feet or more. Furthermore, flash flood-producing rains can also trigger catastrophic mudslides," it said.  —VBL, GMA Integrated News
