PAGASA announces end of La Niña
State weather bureau PAGASA on Monday announced that the La Niña phenomenon has ended.
“[O]cean conditions in the Pacific [are] now back to ENSO-neutral. Forecasts suggest these neutral conditions may continue until mid-2026,” PAGASA said in a social media post.
La Niña, Spanish for "the little girl," is a climate pattern characterized by the periodic cooling of sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean.Even without the La Niña, PAGASA said heavy rains from other weather and climate systems may still occur.
These could cause flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.
PAGASA also advised the public to remain vigilant and engage in appropriate precautionary measures to minimize the impacts of weather- and climate-related hazards.
The state weather bureau earlier said the country should expect four to 11 tropical cyclones to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility from February to June 2026.—Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News
