PAGASA retires 7 tropical cyclone names in 2025

State weather bureau PAGASA on Thursday announced the decommissioning of the names of seven tropical cyclones that devastated parts of the country in 2025.

PAGASA said tropical cyclone names Crising, Emong, Mirasol, Nando, Opong, Tino, and Uwan were removed after the weather disturbances met the criteria required for the decommissioning.

"A domestic tropical cyclone name is decommissioned (i.e., removed from the roster) by PAGASA if its occurrence resulted in either the deaths of at least 300 individuals or damage to agriculture, infrastructure, and other assets amounting to at least P1 billion based on official reports from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD)," PAGASA said in a statement.

"Due to the exceptional magnitude and extent of the devastation they caused, these seven tropical cyclones in 2025 have met the criteria for decommissioning," it added.

Citing the OCD, PAGASA said the tropical cyclones cumulatively resulted in 373 fatalities, 680 injuries, and 132 missing individuals last year. The combined cost of damage amounted to over P36 billion.

Following the decommissioning, the weather bureau will use the replacement names Chico, Elias, Magyawan, Nilad, Omar, Tala, and Upang beginning in 2029. —VBL, GMA Integrated News
