Cloudy skies and rain are expected to persist in several areas in the country in the next 24 hours due to localized thunderstorms, PAGASA said Monday afternoon.

According to its 4 p.m. weather forecast, the state weather bureau said localized thunderstorms will bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms in Metro Manila and the rest of the country.

PAGASA warned that the severe thunderstorms may trigger flash floods or landslides.

Meanwhile, the ridge of the High Pressure Area (HPA) extends over Northern Luzon, state meteorologists said.

An HPA is a region where the atmospheric pressure is higher than in the surrounding areas, bringing slight warmth and causing moisture to evaporate.

PAGASA also said winds will be light to moderate, while coastal waters will be slight to moderate throughout the country.
