Four places in the Visayas are among 17 areas in the country where the heat index was expected to rise to dangerous levels on April 17, 2024, according to data from state weather bureau Pagasa.

The four areas are Iloilo City with heat index reported at 43° Celsius, Dumangas in Iloilo Province (43°C), Catarman in Northern Samar (43°C), and Tacloban City in Leyte (42°C).

Pagasa pointed out that heat index is the “measure of the temperature that a person feels, which is different from the actual air temperature. It is computed by factoring in the humidity as well as air temperature.”

Dangerous level heat index is from 42°C to 51°C, where heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely. Heat stroke is also possible with continued exposure.

Earlier, Pagasa said the country's heat index would peak in April and May this year.
