The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 3 has raised a red tide alert in several coastal areas of Bataan after detecting paralytic shellfish poison in the waters.
In a shellfish advisory, BFAR-3 identified the coastal waters of Orani, Hermosa, Mariveles, Limay, Orion, Pilar, Samal, Abucay, and Balanga City as positive for the toxin.
As a result, BFAR advised the public to refrain from catching, selling, and consuming shellfish and ‘alamang’ from these waters to avoid possible poisoning.
Consuming seafood contaminated with red tide toxins can lead to symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, vomiting, and in severe cases, death.
BFAR assured, however, the public that fish, crabs, and shrimp from these areas are still safe to eat.
BFAR and local government units continue to monitor the areas affected.
