Two traffic enforcers in Iloilo City passed away due to alleged heat stroke.
John Tulio, Sr., a 65-year-old traffic enforcer at the Iloilo City Traffic and Transportation Management Office (TTMO) died on April 7, 2025.
According to Jenilyn Tulio, her husband suffered from a stroke morning on April 3, 2025 in their residence. He lost consciousness as he was trying to pick up the key of his motorcycle that dropped to the ground.
Jenilyn said John was four days in comatose.
“Hindi na niya magalaw ang kabilang kamay at paa niya at ngumiwi ang bibig at nautal ang kanyang pagsasalita,” Jenilyn said.
Jenilyn also said that her husband had a couple of maintenance medicines for hypertension, diabetes, among other ailments.
It was the first time John suffered from a stroke, she said.
She believes that the stroke was due to John’s prolonged exposure to the scorching heat of the sun because of his job as a traffic enforcer.
Prior to John’s death, another traffic enforcer died presumably because of exposure to the sweltering heat.
Following the incident, Randy Dagandara who is also a traffic enforcer said he is extra cautious when handling his duties.
“Kung hindi masyadong abala, nasa tabi lang. Pero kung hindi maiwasan na may collision, ang mahalaga nandyan ka,” Randy said.
As for Jerald Bangero, a 24-year-old construction worker, he said he makes sure he has plenty of drinking water at work.
“Magsuot palagi ng jacket, sombrero, at kung sobrang init manilong lang at uminom ng maraming tubig,” Jerald said.
Darwin Papa, who heads the Disaster Response of the Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, has reminded workers who deal with direct exposure to the sun to make it regular drinking of water a habit.
“Huwag nang hintayin na makaramdam ng uhaw bago tayo uminom ng tubig. As much as possible, every 15 to 30 minutes mag-intake tayo,” Papa said.
