A 32-year-old woman and her 11-year-old child died after a closed van rammed into their home in Mariveles, Bataan, in accident that authorities said was caused by brake failure.

The incident happened in Sitio Marina, Barangay Alas-asin where the vehicle, reportedly speeding downhill, lost its brakes before crashing into several roadside structures.

Police said the driver jumped out of the vehicle before it went out of control.

Col. Mar Joseph Ravelo, chief of the Mariveles Police Station, said.

At least four houses were damaged in the crash, and seven pedestrians were also hit and injured. The victims sustained injuries in different parts of their bodies and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The mother and child were inside their home when the vehicle plowed into it. They were brought to the hospital but were declared dead on arrival.

Dead on arrival.

The driver is now in police custody and is set to face charges. Authorities continue to investigate the incident and urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before traveling to prevent similar accidents.
