Thousands of devotees gathered in Manaoag, Pangasinan on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, for the centennial canonical coronation of Our Lady of Manaoag, marking a milestone in one of the country’s most revered Marian devotions.
The ceremony was held at the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag and began at around 9 a.m., lasting for more than two hours.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos attended the event, which was led by Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, Most Reverend Charles Brown, who presided over the crowning rites.
A reenactment of the 1926 canonical coronation was also held, followed by prayers led by the President.
Devotees braved the heat to witness the historic occasion.
“Deboto talaga ako dito, kaya sinakripisyo ko kahit mainit para kay Inang Maria,” Margarita Reyes, one of the devotees, said.
86-year-old Julieta Aquino also attended despite feeling unwell earlier in the day.
“Deboto ako ni Mama Mary, kanina nahihilo ako, ngayon malakas na malakas na ako,” she said.
Security was tightened in and around the basilica due to the large crowd.
After the coronation, the image of Our Lady of Manaoag was brought out for the “padungaw,” allowing devotees to come closer and view the image.
Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas highlighted the significance of Marian devotion in the country.
“Tayo [ay isang] Christian country, pero tayo rin ay Marian country. Ang ibig sabihin nito ay people beloved of Maria. Hindi nalalayo ang Inang Birheng Maria sa Pangasinan,” he said.
