School officials at a school in Davao City urged parents to enroll their children, as the number of enrollees in the coming school year may decrease after some families relocated due to demolitions in communities nearby.

Angelo Delgado, Assistant Principal of Matina Central Elementary School, said there are around 300 students affected by demolitions at the Arroyo Compound and Matina Aplaya and had to relocate.

“Naa gyuy nagkuha na sa card kay wala na diri nagpuyo. Syempre kung asa sila nagpuyo, didto gyud sila mu-eskwela. Naa ni sa around 300 gyud ni sila unya since atong pagkahitabo sa demolition, mga two weeks or three weeks after ana, ngahinay hinay na og kuha og card, which is understandable kay layo naman gud ilang gipuy-an,” Delgado said.

Delgado said continuing students from Grades 2 to 6 are already pre-registered, which is why their focus now is on new students and transferees.

They also ensure compliance with the policies of the Department of Education (DepEd).

“Ang sa kindergarten, actually, ang gi-require gyud namo ana nga documentary requirements. Number 1 is katong PSA birth certificate,” Delgado said.

The learner population in the previous school year was around 3,700.

Classes will still be on shifting schedules for school year 2026-2027. However, construction has already started on a four-story building that will accommodate 20 classrooms.

According to the DepEd Schools Division of Davao City, nearly three million students are expected to attend public schools in the city in the coming year.
