The top official of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has ordered the immediate repair of national roads and bridges in General Santos City and Sarangani Province damaged by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck on Monday, June 8, 2026.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon inspected areas affected by the powerful tremor and ordered the immediate repair of infrastructure to support ongoing relief, medical, and emergency response operations.
Dizon directed the district engineering offices concerned to expedite repair works to ensure the uninterrupted movement of goods, medical teams, and emergency responders in the areas affected by the quake.
He confirmed that traffic flow remains open on the newly built Buayan Twin Bridge, ensuring continued connectivity between General Santos City and Sarangani Province.
DPWH-12 Director Cayamombao Dia reported that technical teams from all eight district engineering offices have been deployed to conduct rapid damage and assessments and structural integrity checks on key infrastructure.
Dizon also inspected the Dr. Jorge Royeca Hospital in General Santos City and the Sarangani Provincial Hospital in Alabel town to assess the damage and identify urgent repair needs.
Meanwhile, all national roads and bridges inspected under the area of responsibility of the DPWH-Cotabato 1st District Engineering Office (DEO) are passable to all types of vehicles, based on initial assessment conducted by the DEO’s technical team.
No major obstructions were reported while assessment of school buildings is ongoing, as of this writing.
DPWH-12 said the Barangay Tbolok-General Santos City Road is not passable to all types of vehicles after a portion of the road collapsed following the earthquake.
Motorists are advised to take alternate routes and exercise caution when traveling.
