The Provincial Government of Agusan del Sur said it is ready to help the family of the late Rene Baterbonia should they need help in the ongoing investigations into the death of the Ateneo basketball player and that of his team mate Divine Adili.
Governor Santiago Cane, Jr. said the province can provide legal assistance if the Baterbonia family requests.
"If the parents will be satisfied, well and good, but kung hindi pa rin sila satisfied sa findings based on the result of the autopsy and their probe, it might give the provincial government a reason to step in,” Cane said.
Baterbonia was laid to rest at a cemetery in his hometown of Talacogon in Agusan del Sur on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.
He was buried more than two weeks since he and Adili drowned while at a team-building activity of the Ateneo men’s basketball team in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8.
His family and supporters continue to call for justice.
On the same day Baterbonia was laid to rest, Ateneo de Manila University President, Fr. Roberto Yap, appeared before the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) at Camp Crame for the fact-finding investigation being undertaken to determine the circumstances behind the drowning.
Yap reportedly did not issue any statement to the media.
Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the investigation is nearly complete and authorities are expected to file charges against around 10 to 15 individuals.
“We’ve interviewed almost a hundred people. Siguro 1,200 na pahina ng testimonya galing sa mga nandudoon at halos kumpleto na kami. Conclusive na at very confident sa case buildup na ang CIDG,” Remulla said.
HOUSING ASSISTANCE
Meanwhile, Cane confirmed that the National Housing Authority (NHA) has granted a condominium unit in Bangkal, Davao City as housing assistance to Baterbonia’s family.
In a Facebook post, Cane said representatives from NHA-Caraga are set to visit the Baterbonia family on Friday, June 26, to speak with them about the grant.
