In-person classes in several schools in General Santos City have been suspended due to the magnitude 6.5 earthquake that struck evening on Friday, June 26, 2026.

This will give authorities time to reassess school buildings.

Since the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Sarangani on June 8, 2026, classes in all schools in General Santos City have been canceled.

According to the Department of Education (DepEd), around 1,400 schools sustained minor damage, while about 100 classrooms suffered major damage.

After authorities completed their assessment, some schools have been found safe enough to resume face-to-face classes starting this week.

However, at around 7:34 p.m. on June 26, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Davao Occidental, with its epicenter located near Balut Island in Sarangani town.

DepEd General Santos City said due to the earthquake, schools need to be reassessed in line with the directive of the local government.

The reassessment will be carried out by DepEd engineers, city engineers, and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

“For the safety of everyone, kailangan I cancel muna  to give time for our engineering  na inspect muli ang ating mga offices at mga classrooms,” DepEd GenSan Schools Division Superintendent, Isagani Dela Cruz, said.

However, alternative modes of learning will be implemented.

“Right now ang main namin ay modular, kay ang ating mga guro ay busy din sa pagdidistribute ng mga module. Ang iba sinisend nila sa group chat,” Dela Cruz added.
