At least 1,307 families in the Province of Antique had to move to safer ground after persistent rains flooded their communities on July 9, 2026.
The day after, at least 71 families continued to stay at the evacuation center.
The families are from 22 barangays in the following towns:
- Laua-an
- Sibalom
- Barbaza
- San Jose
- Culasi
- Belison
- Anini-y
- Tobias Fornier
“Baka may mga malalim na pagbaha ngayon sa ini-expect natin. Patuloy ang pagbibigay ng mga warning at information,” said Broderick Train, head of the Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).
In neighboring Negros Occidental, up to 600 families or 1,953 individuals were also evacuated because of the persistent rains.
The rains experienced in Western Visayas and other parts of the Philippines were caused by Habagat intensified by #IndayPH.
“Ito ang nagdadala ng ulan sa Western Visayas lalo na sa bahagi ng Antique,” said Charlie Depra, weather observer at PAGASA Iloilo.
In the coastal area of Arevalo in Iloilo City, residents continue to be vigilant.
“Nagmamasid lang kami sa tubig kung lalaki. Kapag lumaki na, gumigising talaga kami dito sa dagat, tinitingnan ang tubig para kung ano man, ready na,” said Almendrita Decena, a resident.
CLASSES
Up to 1,289 schools in Region 6 have suspended face-to-face classes because of the rain, affecting 414,000 students.
“Automatically, we shifted our learners to alternative delivery mode,” said Hernani Escullar, Jr., spokesperson of the Department of Education (DepEd)-6.
In Negros Occidental, which belongs to the Negros Island Region (NIR), 23 local government units suspended face-to-face classes.
WHIRLWIND
In the town of Hinigaran, at least 18 houses along the coast in Barangays Tagda and Pilar were damaged by a whirlwind on July 9.
“Mga partially damaged na bahay. Ang ipinapayo pa rin ng provincial government is patuloy pa rin tayong mag-monitor sa mga weather advisories,” said Brylle Larry Sanor, deputy chief of the Negros Occidental PDRRMO Operations Center.
