The Philippine eagle “Sawaga-Dalwangan,” which was rescued in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon in early July, has passed away, the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) announced on Saturday, July 18, 2026.

PEF said the eagle died while undergoing rehabilitation at the Philippine Eagle Center.

PEF explained that the eagle showed encouraging progress after it was rescued on July 3. The eagle reportedly regained its strength and became more responsive, fed independently, and showed positive signs or recovery.

“These observations were the basis of our earlier recovery updates,” PEF said.

Despite these promising developments, PEF said the bird later experienced an unexpected medical emergency and could not be revived.

PEF said an initial necropsy has been completed, while histopathological examinations are still underway.

PEF added that it will release a comprehensive report detailing the findings once all test results have been finalized.

“We are deeply grateful to the Daraghuyan community, rescuer Marven Linoy and his companions, DENR, the Malaybalay City Government, the Provincial Zoo, the veterinary teams, and all partners who helped rescue and care for her,” PEF said.

“We share the grief of everyone who followed her journey and hoped for her recovery. Sawaga-Dalwangan’s rescue was not in vain, and the lessons from her case will help improve the care of other Philippine Eagles,” it added.

It can be recalled that a farmer, Marvin Linoy rescued the eagle near the Sawaga River in Barangay Dalwangan after it was attacked by at least 30 monkeys.

Several maggot-infested wounds and metal pellets were found in its body, prompting authorities to place the eagle under intensive veterinary care and close observation.
