Vice President Sara Duterte visited the family of the Grade 10 student who was killed, as well as the survivors of the August 18, 2026 shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU).

Duterte said they discussed possible measures to strengthen student protection and safety.

She shared no other detail.

The Vice President also visited the survivors of the school shooting.

Duterte said that when she was secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd), they have prepared for the possibility of scenarios of violence in schools, noting the cases in other countries.

“Kaya nga pinalakas natin yung learners’ rights and protection office o LRPO noong ako ay kalihim ng DepEd para sila yung gagawa ng programa - number one, sa anti bullying natin; pangalawa, sa psychosocial wellness program natin na dapat i-pursue natin bilang isang bansa,” Duterte said.

Duterte also stressed the importance of monitoring students and school personnel.

Asked if she supports banning minors from social media, she said any policy should place the responsibility on social media platforms in preventing minors from registering.
