2017 in hashtags: From #ArtPH to #symbolism to #fafda

Powerful hashtags like #metoo took the world by storm in 2017...and strange tweets from presidents gave the Twitterverse gems like #covfefe.

In the Philippines, our own public servants had their fair share of gaffes, like #maram, and our own move towards empowerment, like beauty queen and Kapuso actor Megan Young using #balakangbabe to empower women whose hips don't lie. People followed celebrity weddings through clever portmanteaus (#akhoandmybeloved, #theWanforAnne), but the public wasn't so distracted that they didn't #PrayforMarawi and mourn senseless deaths.
