Commuters bring 'Hindi Po Kami Tambay' tarp while waiting for ride

A Facebook photo featuring a group of commuters with a tarp commenting on the government's anti-tambay operations has gone viral.

The tarp carried the message: “Hindi po kami tambay, nag-aabang lang ng jeep. At kung tambay man, huwag kaming hulihin, saktan, patayin!”

Uploader Anthony Comedia told YouScoop that message in the photo, taken on at 6:30 p.m. on June 25 in Batangas, was the idea of a certain Sir Albert.

“It was our way of making a point. 'Di sya literal dapat tingnan. Mas may malalim na kahulugan ang post na yun. Gusto naming iparating na dapat kung huhuli ng tao, tambay man o hindi, may probable cause at nasa tamang proseso!” Sir Albert said.

The photo had been shared more than 17,000 times as of Wednesday evening.

Since last week, policemen have arrested thousands of people in Metro Manila alone for violating curfew ordinances, for drinking in public places or streets, for being half-naked in the streets and other offenses. It came in the wake of pronouncements of President Rodrigo Duterte for a campaign against loiterers.

The crackdown has faced more scrutiny this week following the death of detainee Genesis Argoncillo while in police custody. While police maintain that he was arrested for alarm and scandal, witnesses have come out saying he was apprehended for going out shirtless. —JST, GMA News
