Ilonggo teacher among the 10 finalists for global teacher prize
A teacher of Alcarde Gustilo Memorial National High School in Iloilo has been named by philanthropist Bill gates as one of the 10 best teachers in the world.
Jesus Insilada, an English and Creative Writing Teacher, is among the 10 finalists of the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2018, running for the US$1 million award.
The prize honors “that one exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession as well as to shine a spotlight on the important role teachers play in society.”
According to a press statement, Insilada uses a “culture-based approach to make students become more engaged in their education and more appreciative of their Panay Bukidnon culture.”
Insilada and the rest of the finalists have been selected from more than 30,000 nominations and applications from 173 countries.
In the announcement video, Mr. Gates said “finalists were selected based on a rigorous set of criteria including their proven effectiveness in inspiring students and helping them learn.”
This won’t be the first time Insilada has been recognized. In 2013, he was chosen as an honoree of the Many Faces of the Teacher of the Bato Balane Foundation.
The Ilongo educator also already holds four Palanca awards, winning in the short story in Hiligaynon category in 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2017. — LA, GMA News
