‘Trapo’, ‘Bongga’, more Filipino words added to Oxford English Dictionary

New Filipino words have been added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), with two entries — "Bongga" and "Trapo" — getting the spotlight on the official update published on October 3.

The OED defines bongga as "extravagant, flamboyant; impressive, stylish." Trapo, on the other hand, is defined as "a politician perceived as belonging to a conventional and corrupt ruling class."

The October 2018 update saw over 1,400 additions to the OED.

Other new entries from the Philippines include bagoong, bihon, calamansi, carinderia, ensaimada, palay, panciteria, sorbetes, and turon.

Filipino words like kilig, teleserye, and barkada are among the words that have previously been added to the OED. — AT, GMA News
