Can the two kinds of alopecia still be treated?

In a recent “Pinoy MD” episode, resident dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez discussed alopecia, or hair loss.

According to Dr. Marquez, there are two types of alopecia: Alopecia Areata and Genetic Alopecia.

If you notice a strange pattern of hair loss – you suddenly have a bald spot, or patches of baldness, for instance — then you probably have Alopecia Areata.

It occurs when you’re stressed out, your immune system is down, “after pregnancy, and when you have vitamin deficiency.” Says Dr. Marquez, it can even occur among kids.

The good thing about Alopecia Areata is that hair grows back. If you’re feeling antsy though, there are hair stimulants you can use. “May ini-inject, or pinapahid to stimulate hair growth,” Dr. Marquez informs, adding it’s best to consult a doctor before doing anything.

As its name suggests, Genetic Alopecia is something that’s passed on to you, whether you’re male or female. This type of alopecia is something that requires treatment and medication. “Ginagamot talaga yan, at hindi basta-bastang isang linggong gamutan yan,” Dr. Marquez says, adding it usually takes about four months before hair starts growing again.

A caveat: A person suffering from Genetic Alopecia can still experience hair loss even after having treatment already. “In extreme cases, baka kailanganin ng hair transplant,” Dr. Marquez adds.

In both cases, a visit to the doctor is highly suggested. — LA, GMA News
