The only Pinoy designer to show bridal gowns at the New York Fashion Week has a tip for all brides

“Don’t over-decorate.”

This is the advice fashion designer Jef Albea would like to tell more brides.

“Sometimes, when they are so engaged with social media and are always searching for pegs online, brides forget,” he continues adding simplicity and “making every piece an artwork” are always good measures for any wedding.

Jef Albea is the only Filipino fashion designer to show bridal gowns at the recent New York Fashion Week. At the gala show in Studio 450 in Manhattan, the 35-year-old Manila-based designer presented six ball dresses.

Says Jef, the dresses were based on the ensembles of bridal dresses he’s been designing in the last 10 years.

“I got the invitation in December 2017, decided to join in January and constructed and prepared the dresses two weeks before leaving for New York,” Jef narrates.
They were “basically different hues of my favorite bridal looks,” the self-taught designer said.

And if brides planning their weddings could take away just one thing from his six-piece collection, it would be that clean, elegant lines will always be in fashion.

Understated embroideries, bead work, and crystals always do the job, too.

“As a designer, of course I will always listen to my bride – to what she wants and we will work together to create a wedding dress for her. But either way, the most important thing I think would be confidence. Brides must be confident to to wear the dress designed by her chosen designer.”

This is Jef’s first time to show in New York, which came at the heels of his participation at the London Fashion Week in September 2017. “I am so proud to carry the Philippine flag and show the world how talented and hardworking Filipinos are. It was surreal knowing and feeling fellow Filipinos cheering me on and congratulating me,” he said. — LA, GMA News
