Uber to pay P5 million fine imposed by LTFRB

Uber Philippines on Wednesday said it will pay the P5 million fine imposed by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) for various violations of the terms and conditions to operate as transportation network company (TNC).

"We will comply with the order issued by the LTFRB today," Uber Philippines Communications head Cat Avelino said in a text message to reporters.

The LTFRB on Tuesday slapped both Grab and Uber with a P5 million fine for violating provisions of the certificate of TNC accreditation under Memorandum Circular 2015-016.

Grab and Uber admitted during a hearing at the LTFRB office that they have allowed Transport Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) drivers to operate even without Certificate of Public Convenience (CPC) franchise or provisional authority (PA).

Despite the penalty, the LTFRB allowed both firms to continue operating in the country.

"We thank the LTFRB for recognizing the important role ridesharing plays in our country's transportation system," Avelino said.

"We look forward to working with the LTFRB and the DOTr (Department of Transportation) towards sustainable mobility solutions for the benefit of all our riders and drivers," she added. — VDS, GMA News
