Third player to open new revenue streams for telcos - Globe

Mislatel Consortium — officially declared as the new major player earlier this week — could open up new revenue streams for telecommunications companies, according to Globe Telecom Inc.

"The new player has the potential of opening up new sources of revenue streams for telcos while providing consumers with more innovative products and services," the company said in a statement.

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) on Monday officially declared Mislatel as the country's new major player which would compete with incumbents Globe and PLDT Inc.

Mislatel Consortium is composed of Davao businessman Dennis Uy's Udenna Corporation and Chelsea Logistics Holdings Corp., franchise holder Mindanao Islamatic Telephone Co., and foreign partner China Telecommunications Corp.

“Mindanao Islamatic Telephone Company Inc. with Udenna Corporation, Chelsea Logistics Holdings Corp., and China Telecommunications Corp. (is declared) as the New Major Player,” it said in a resolution dated November 19.

The declaration comes 12 days after the bidding process where Mislatel was the only third telco aspirant qualified after submitting all the necessary requirements.

"Globe Telecom welcomes the new telco challenger which is seen to help foster a healthy competitive environment and ultimately benefit consumers," the Ayala-led company said.

"We welcome competition, including the entry of new operator through this selection process... Competition is the norm in a liberalized environment and will benefit our customers, the industry, and the country. We are ready to compete," PLDT Spokesperson Ramon Isberto said separately.

Mislatel on Tuesday said it will carry a "disruptive" brand name to compete with the incumbents.

The new major player also said its doors are open for possible partnerships with other telecommunications firms such as Globe and PLDT. —LDF, GMA News
