Residents, militant groups rally vs. demolition in Pasig

Residents of Barangay Sta. Lucia in Pasig City, together with members of militantn groups, took to the streets on Thursday to protest an impending demolition of houses.

A Balitanghali report by GMA News' Marisol Abdurahman said the protesters and members of Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay) started the rally along East Bank Road Floodway at 7 a.m.

The report said the protesters strongly opposed the proposed relocation because it would be a burden for them to pay the water, electric and rental fees. They added that it would be difficult for them to find a new source of income once they are relocated.

They demanded to see Pasig City Mayor Robert Eusebio, but according to authorities, the government official was busy to meet them.

Police gave protesters until 12 noon to disperse, but according to them they will leave the area if the policemen would also vacate the place.

The report said the rally caused heavy traffic on the area.

Three to four fire trucks were on standby for the dispersal of the protesters. —Anna Felicia Bajo/KBK, GMA News
