MRT-3 limits service on Monday morning due to discarded diaper

The Metro Rail Transit-3 (MRT-3) carried out provisional service from the North Avenue station to Shaw Boulevard station and vice versa on Monday morning due to a diaper.

According to an interview with Transportation Undersecretary Cesar Chavez on Unang Balita, the service interruption was caused by a diaper thrown in the tunnels between Buendia and Ayala stations.

"Nakatama 'yung diaper sa overhead cabinary system. Ang OCS ay 'yung daluyan ng kuryente at 'yung OCS ang dumidikit sa pantograph na 'yung kuryente naman kumukuha papunta sa mga bagon," Chavez explained.

"Hindi natin pwedeng isakripisyo 'yung safety. Tinigil natin 'yung pasada hanggang Shaw Boulevard," he continued.

Chavez said removing the diaper was not easy because of the presence of electricity and the underground location of the affected area.

Traffic delayed the repair crew from reaching the site of the incident but the MRT resumed normal operations an hour after the incident was detected at 6:16 a.m.

Chavez said they are trying to identify the person who threw the diaper that caused the service interruption.

"Pinahahanap natin 'yan sapagkat malayo-layo sa Buendia station at malayo-layo rin sa Ayala station at medyo madilim ng konti kaya dapat pasukin mismo," he said.

The MRT classified the error as a category 4 or service interruption/cancellation of loops.

Management apologized to commuters for the inconvenience.
