PNP’s ‘sonic weapon’ causes discomfort among protesters

Militant groups have questioned the legality of the PNP's use of the Long Range Acoustic Device—a "sonic weapon" as BAYAN's Renato Reyes described it—against anti-Trump marchers who tried to go near the ASEAN venue in Manila on Monday.

"This is considered as a sonic weapon, mataas, matining... high-pitched sound, repetitive," Reyes said.

"Ano siya eh, it's designed to disrupt the protest. Delikado ang weapon na 'yan. It affects everyone, even bystanders. That's a serious assault to the people. It's a violation of our rights," he added.

Director Oscar Albayalde, chief of the National Capital Region Police Office, said the LRAD wouldn't kill any one but would only cause enough discomfort to keep unruly demonstrators at bay.

“Temporary discomfort lang, wala siyang epekto.  It is not considered a lethal device,” Albayalde said.

So how does it sound? Listen here.
