Demolition of 'Leaning Tower of Payatas' starts

The "Leaning Tower of Payatas" is being demolished to prevent it from falling apart and to protect the residents in the area from being hurt.

According to a "24 Oras" report by Cesar Apolinario, the said tower, which was compared to Italy's Leaning Tower of Pisa due to its structure, have remained idle for the past six months.

The four-storey building was affected by nearby road constructions that affected other houses in the area.

Angie Juguilon, Christ Church Refuge pastor, said she has mixed emotions on the demolition of the building, which was previously the site of the church.

"Marami din akong memories diyan kaya masasabi kong masaya ako at least maresolbahan na, nakakalungkot din," Juguilon said.

To ensure the safety of the people in the area, the demolition team used a backhoe in the operation. The workers has started to demolish the 4th floor of the building.

"Nung maano namin... dahil ang bigat kasi ng building nandito sa harapan. Pag nabawasan na ng bigat dito, pwede na namin siya hatakin," said Boy Limpin, the foreman for the project.

Policemen are also monitoring the demolition project to keep the residents from harm.

"Nakikita namin kung gano kalaki 'yung pwedeng idulot na peligro sa mga tao," said Police Senior Inspector Jacinto Pascual of Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Station 6.

It will take one week for the demolition work to finish, the report said. — Anna Felicia Bajo/BAP, GMA News
