Procession of Black Nazarene replicas held ahead of Traslacion


Thousands of devotees on Sunday held a procession for replicas of the Black Nazarene in Manila two days ahead of the main event on January 9.

The procession started at Plaza Miranda, then followed the route of past processions, turning left on to Quezon Boulevard then left on Gil Puyat, right on Evangelista Street, right on Recto Avenue, right on Loyola Street, right on Bilibid Viejo through Puyat, left on Guzman Street, right on Hidalgo Street, left on Barbosa Street, right on Globo de Oro, right on Palanca Street, and right on Villalobos Street to the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, also known as Quiapo Church.

The procession is part of the set of activities for the Feast of the Black Nazarene, which will culminate in the Traslacion on Tuesday, January 9.

The Black Nazarene is a life-sized statue of Jesus Christ carrying the cross. The work of an unknown Mexican artist, it was believed to have been brought to the Philippines in the early 17th century. The procession every January 9 commemorates the transfer of the image from Intramuros to Quiapo Church in 1787.
