Senate urges MMDA to suspend EDSA driver-only ban

The Senate adopted Wednesday a resolution urging the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority to suspend its ban on driver-only vehicles in EDSA during rush hours and conduct a public consultation or hearing before implementing it.

Senate President Vicente Sotto III directed the Senate Secretariat to send a copy of Senate Resolution 845 to the MMDA.

All senators became co-authors of the resolution filed by Sotto, Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri, Senate Pro-Tempore Ralph Recto, and Minority Leader Franklin Drilon.

Drilon, in pushing for the adoption of the resolution, said the regulation would discriminate against those who cannot afford to hire a driver.

“That is the single biggest argument against this. It unduly favors those who have resources to hire drivers. Kung may kaya po kayo at mag-hire kayo ng driver, kayo ay exempted," Drilon said.

"This is a regulation that should have undergone a more extensive consultation,” he said. —NB, GMA News
