LPA off western Luzon intensifies into Tropical Depression Fabian

The low-pressure area west of Luzon has intensified into a tropical depression before noon Thursday and has been codenamed Fabian - mere hours after Tropical Storm Emong (Leepi) exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

In a radio interview, PAGASA forecaster Joey Figuracion said Tropical Depression Fabian will enhance the southwest monsoon and may exit the PAR on Saturday.

"Naging tropical depression na ito. Walang direct effect ito sa ating bansa pero ie-enhance nito ang southwest monsoon," Figuracion told dzBB radio.

He said Fabian may bring moderate to heavy rainfall at an estimated 5 to 15 mm per hr from within its 300-km diameter.

Figuracion said the rain from Fabian may fall over the western section of Luzon, including Palawan.

Meanwhile, PAGASA's 11 a.m. advisory said Fabian was estimated at 290 km west of Iba, Zambales as of 10 a.m., with maximum winds of 55 kph near the center.

"It was moving north-northwest at 11 kph and is expected to be 350 km west of Sinait, Ilocos Norte. By Saturday morning, it is expected to be 410 km northwest of Laoag City or outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility," PAGASA said.

While no public storm warning signals are raised, PAGASA said Fabian will enhance the southwest monsoon, "which will bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms over the western section of Luzon particularly Palawan." — RSJ/TJD, GMA News
