Duterte on US aid: We can turn to China, Russia

With improved ties with China and Russia, President Rodrigo Duterte could not care less that a United States aid agency has decided to defer the selection of the Philippines for a second grant.

Duterte told reporters, after meeting with the Filipino community in Singapore on Friday night, that the Millennium Challenge Corporation can start packing their bags and leave within six months.

"We'll be glad to lose it... We will not go hungry. We will not go hungry without the American aid. We are not that desperate," he said, when a reporter pointed out that the Philippines lost over $400 million worth of aid.

"We can always get it from China and Russia," he added.

After a US senator warned that they can stop supporting countries that violated human rights, Duterte dared the US, the United Nations and the European Union to pull out their aid from the Philippines.

Earlier Friday, Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jianhua signed a memorandum of understanding with Social Welfare and Development Secretary Judy Taguiwalo for a P100 million donation to fund anti-poverty programs.
