The State Counselor of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, arrived in Manila Friday afternoon to represent her country to the 30th Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.

The plane carrying the Nobel laureate and head of Myanmar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs landed around 2:40 p.m. at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 in Pasay City.

She was accompanied by the Ambassador of Myanmar to the Philippines, U Win Naing.

Suu Kyi and the ambassador were welcomed by Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial.

An icon of democracy in Myanmar for her unwavering stand on freedom and human rights, Suu Kyi is representing Myanmar on behalf of President U Htin Kyaw who does not attend multilateral meetings based on tradition.

Myanmar joined the ASEAN on July 23, 1997. The country hosted the ASEAN Summit for the first time in 2014.

President Rodrigo Duterte and Suu Kyi met last month upon the invitation of the Myanmar President. The two leaders held bilateral talks with Htin Kyaw who also hosted a banquet in honor of Duterte.

Duterte donated $300,000 to the communities in Myanmar's Rakhine State. He turned over the symbolic check to Suu Kyi after their meeting at the Presidential Palace in Nay Pit Kaw. — VDS, GMA News
